A few times a year I take people somewhere hard and beautiful, and the phones go in a drawer. One question a day. A great deal of silence.
Exhaust the body. Vivify the soul.
The difficulty isn't decoration. Hard country strips the performance out of a person faster than any conversation can — and what's left underneath gets reconnected to the three things that actually hold: God, yourself, and the people beside you.
No signal. That's the feature.
From presence. Not for escape.
Most leaders haven't gone seventy-two hours without input in a decade. The first day is uncomfortable for exactly that reason. The second is when people start saying things they didn't know they were carrying.
It's supposed to cost you.
From effort. Not for achievement.
Long days, real elevation, weather that gets a vote. For some trips you'll need to train for months, and that's part of the point — the preparation is the retreat starting early. Difficulty is honest in a way comfort isn't.
One question a day. No agenda.
From stillness. Not for output.
No curriculum, no whiteboard. One prompt in the morning, left to work on you while you walk. We come back to it at a fire, and mostly we listen. The mountain asks better questions than I do.
What's said on the mountain stays there.
From trust. Not for content.
I can't tell you the best stories from these trips, and that's not modesty. Nothing gets repeated, repurposed, or worked into a talk. The confidentiality isn't a policy. It's the product.
Faith is the foundation, not the filter.
From grace. Not for approval.
I'm a Christian, and out there it's harder to argue with — the scale does the theology before anyone says a word. You don't have to share it to come, and I won't ambush you with it. But I'd rather you know what's under the floor.
